Opeth Releases Concept Album, “The Last Will and Testament”

Opeth: The Last Will and Testament

Opeth is back with their 14th studio album. The Last Will and Testament is another concept album from the Swedish prog-metal masters set after World War I. It tells the story of a wealthy patriarch who has no heirs and leaves a last will, revealing family secrets. As such, each track is titled numerically after a section sign “§,” as if being read paragraph by paragraph.

The album sees the return of vocalist/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt, utilizing death growls in addition to singing. Its guitar tones are also heavier than 2019’s In Cauda Venenum. However, it’s not all one heavy affair. Songs like “§4” feature harp, and Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson provides his signature flute across several tracks.

One consistent aspect is the awesome bass work of Martin Mendez. Luckily, the band has released a few playthrough videos, including this one for “§3”:

The Last Will and Testament is available now on CD, vinyl, audio cassette, and as a digital download (Apple Music and Amazon Music).
