10 Must-Hear Albums Bassists Loved in 2024: Reader Favorites That Defined the Year
The end of the year is a time for reflection. One of our favorite things is to amplify what the global bass playing community is doing, and there’s no better way than to share their music.
We covered many albums this year. Here are the top 10 reader favorites for 2024.
As always, our “best of” lists are based on article views, making this a true reflection of what resonated most with the No Treble community this year.
1. Blu DeTiger Releases Full-Length Debut, “All I Ever Want Is Everything”
Blu DeTiger grew her audience on TikTok with killer covers and then her own original songs. Though the platform is based on brevity, DeTiger has been getting deeper into long form releases. Now, she’s dropped her debut full-length studio album, “All I Ever Want Is Everything.”
2. Joe Dart Drives the Groove on “The Fearless Flyers IV”
Get ready to take flight: The Fearless Flyers are at it again! The band has just released “The Fearless Flyers IV,” featuring songs captured at the Blue Note in New York City.
3. Ghost-Note Releases “Mustard n’Onions” with MonoNeon and Marcus Miller
Ghost-Note has released their third album, “Mustard n’Onions,” which – as you can imagine from the title – is a funky affair. That's thanks in part to bassists MonoNeon and Marcus Miller.
4. Previously Unheard James Brown Song Features Bootsy Collins on Bass
Universal Music Enterprises and Republic Records have announced the release of a previously unheard 1970 track by James Brown. The song features a stone cold bass line from Bootsy Collins.
5. Brian Bromberg Pays Tribute to a Legend on “LaFaro”
Scott LaFaro was only 25 when he tragically died in a car accident in 1961, but the body of work he left changed jazz bass playing for good. He influenced the majority of today’s best bassists. That includes Brian Bromberg, who has just released a trio album in his honor.
6. Mike Stern Announces New Album with Christian McBride and Richard Bona
Jazz guitar giant Mike Stern has announced a new album called “Echoes and Other Songs,” which promises to be a killer record. Aside from Stern's great compositions, the music is brought to life by a lineup of monster musicians.
7. Primus, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle Announce the “Sessanta E.P.P.P.”
One of the most anticipated tours of 2024 is the Sessanta tour, which will feature A Perfect Circle, Primus, and Puscifer all on one stage to celebrate singer Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday. Now the groups have revealed that they’ve made an album together.
8. Jeff Coffin Recruits Top Bassists for “Only The Horizon”
Virtuoso saxophonist Jeff Coffin is a member of the Dave Matthews Band and a former member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. As such, he’s befriended some of the most talented musicians in the world. That’s clear on his new album, “Only The Horizon.”
9. Lake Street Dive Returns with “Good Together”
Lake Street Dive has released their new album, “Good Together,” which expands on their sound as each member contributed to the music in its earliest stages. They gathered in drummer Mike Calabrese’s Vermont home to work together from the beginning.
10. Kamasi Washington Releases “Fearless Movement” with Miles Mosley, Thundercat, and Ben Williams
Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington has returned with his fifth studio album, “Fearless Movement,” with Thundercat, Miles Mosley, and Ben Williams on bass.
