Meters Legend George Porter, Jr. Drops “Porter’s Pocket” – A Funky Return to His Roots

George Porter, Jr. & Runnin' Pardners: Porter's Pocket

The ever-funky George Porter, Jr. is showing off his groove in a new album with his band Runnin’ Pardners. Porter’s Pocket is described as a return to form for the bass hero of New Orleans in that it returns to the instrumental jam style he pioneered with The Meters.

Porter digs into a variety of sounds from his hometown’s street beat to swing to a “minimalistic spaced-out blues.” His regular fans may recognize bits and pieces of the eight new songs from the Runnin’ Pardners’ weekly gigs at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans.

“A lot of the foundations of these songs were drum and bass pockets we made up on stage at our Monday night Maple Leaf shows that we went back and revisited in the studio,” Porter explains.

He released the Meters-esque “Tito’s Dumpling Machine” when the album was announced in November. Get another taste of the album with the reggae-tinged “Sauce on the Side”:

Porter’s Pocket is out now on digital platforms including Apple Music and Amazon Music, and more. You can also find it on vinyl through the bassist’s website.
