Alabama Shakes Return After 8 Years – But With a Big Change

Alabama Shakes 2025

Back in December, Alabama Shakes made a surprise reunion at Druid City Music Hall in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Now they’re gearing up for a full tour.

Following drummer Steve Johnson’s legal problems, the band is now a three-piece featuring lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Brittany Howard, lead guitarist Heath Fogg, and bassist Zac Cockrell. Howard shared the news.

“Last year, Heath, Zac, and I started chatting about how much fun it would be to make music together and tour again as Alabama Shakes,” she said in a statement. “This band and these songs have been such a source of joy for all of us. It is crazy that it has been 10 years since we released Sound and Color and eight years since we played a show.”

Alabama Shakes took a hiatus in 2018 so that Howard could focus on her solo work. Cockrell continued to work with her during that period. The band will tour extensively from July through September with support from Lee Fields, Y La Bamba, The Budos Band, and more. See below for full dates.

Until then, let’s throw it back to the video for “Hold On”:
