A Farewell to Anthony Jackson: His Unforgettable Bass Work on “Desire” with Hiromi

Anthony Jackson has passed away, and the bass world feels it deeply. Few players have left such a lasting mark on the instrument, not only through their playing but through the very tools we use to play. Jackson’s vision and collaboration with Fodera and others gave rise to the six string contrabass guitar, expanding what bass could be both sonically and musically.

One of my favorite performances of his is this clip of Hiromi Uehara’s Trio Project performing “Desire.” It captures everything that made Jackson’s playing so remarkable: power, precision, and that unmistakable sense of authority in every note. His sound anchors the trio while giving it room to soar.

I was lucky enough to see this trio live in 2016 in Chicago. Watching Anthony Jackson, Simon Phillips, and Hiromi together on stage was a masterclass in musicianship. Every moment was locked in yet alive, a reminder of how high the bar can be set when true masters come together.

This video is a perfect way to remember Anthony Jackson, focused, fearless, and always pushing the bass forward.
