Gail Ann Dorsey Makes a Triumphant Return With “(It Takes All Kinds) To Make a World”

Gail Ann Dorsey 2025

Gail Ann Dorsey‘s storied career has included performances and recordings with David Bowie, Tears for Fears, Lenny Kravitz, the Indigo Girls, The National, and numerous other artists. She’s also a solo artist with three albums to her credit, but she hasn’t released any solo music for over two decades. Until now.

“(It Takes All Kinds) To Make a World” marks the bassist/singer/songwriter’s first new song since 2004’s I Used To Be… She shared the song via Righteous Babe Records with a statement.

“Needless to say, it has been more years than I care to count since I released some of my own music into the world as a solo artist,” Gail says, “but today that changes!” I am honoured and deeply grateful to be a part of the Righteous Babe family of incredible artists whose music and creativity lifts and inspires me… and a large and loving thanks to its righteous founder, Ani DiFranco, who continues to raise the bar for us all to open our minds and our hearts. I hope this song will remind us all to tap into the tolerance and understanding we desperately need; to live and let live.”

The song was recorded between Paris and New York’s Hudson Valley with pianist Michel Amsellem, guitarist David Spinozza, drummer Jerry Marotta, percussionist Mayra Casales, and saxophonist Feal Le Rouzic. Dorsey wrote the music and lyrics. She plays bass and recorded both the lead and background vocals.

“(It Takes All Kinds) To Make a World” has a throwback vibe that recalls Dorsey’s early songwriting influences such as Carole King, Roberta Flack, and Joan Armatrading.

“When I think of the first music that ever inspired me, it was all so magically intricate and had so much depth and dimension, so much color! I want to be as unrestricted and expressive as I can possibly be,” she explains.

Her exquisite bass line is the perfect blend of supportive and melodic. As always, her tone is to die for.

“(It Takes All Kinds) To Make a World” is streaming on Apple Music, Amazon Music, and other services. Dorsey is currently on tour with her solo act opening up for Thomas Dolby. See below for full tour dates.
