John Scofield’s SFJAZZ show features standout upright bass from Vicente Archer
John Scofield kicked into this tune at SFJAZZ and the whole thing snapped into focus the second Vicente Archer came in on upright. His sound had this warm, round lift that made the groove feel instantly good.
Archer and Bill Stewart settled into a pocket that felt almost conversational while Scofield tossed lines over the top, dipping in and out of the rhythm. Gerald Clayton added little sparks that filled the edges.
The cool surprise was how Archer kept shifting the energy with small moves. A line here, a little push there, and suddenly the tune opened up in a new way. It gave the whole moment a relaxed lift, like the band was catching a fresh breeze right in the middle of the tune.
