Percussive Bass Study in A Minor: Ghost Notes, Groove, and Funk Feel

Over the years, I have used one trick when I was obliged to play simple, basic notes (think roots and fifths), but wanted to spice things up. Fortunately, I could always incorporate some percussive notes.

The beauty of percussive (muted or ghost) notes lies in the rhythm. You can create truly complex phrases without interfering with other instruments in the mix, as you are only adding rhythm and not unnecessary notes that would clash with the vocals or chord voicings. So, add percussive elements wherever you like.

Another positive aspect of adding percussive notes is that it helps you lock in with the drummer/rhythm section, as you can create smooth-sounding patterns in the same way that guitarists strum even when their strings are muted to keep their pendulum going.

Our primary tone material will be the Am pentatonic scale (A, C, D, E, G, A), enriched with some chromatic notes to create a more sophisticated, bluesy sound.

We will start in a higher position for the ‘funky guitar’ style (bars 1–8), then add a two-bar lick for the groove transition (bars 9–10).

The main groove has a slightly late-70s The Professionals vibe, starting in bar 11, with variations and more complex licks in bars 19–26.

This groove is all about sixteenth notes and perfect placement. Once you start to feel each bar in sixteenth note divisions, your rhythm fluidity and sense of feeling will expand, making your grooves more intricate and complex.

However, you can still decide to play just three notes, but the surrounding percussion will make them groove harder.

Have fun and keep it funky!
