Drummer, composer, bandleader, and vocalist Cindy Blackman Santana has announced a new solo album called Coherence, which will be dropping on July 31st. The new collection of songs explores “jazz, fusion, rock, and spiritual improvisation,” a press release explains, and the album title reflects that and more.

“Coherence is about everything in creation coming together,” Blackman Santana states. “We come from the creator. In these times, we need unity. We need to understand that we are not different… the core of every single human being is light.”

Coherence will be filled with specisl guests including her husband, guitar legend Carlos Santana, and Ray Angry, Dave Eggar, bassist Matt Garrison, and more. The core of the album was recorded with her longtime touring band featuring saxophonist Emilio Modeste, guitarist Aurelien Budynek, keyboardist Zaccai Curtis, and bassist Felix Pastorius. Between Pastorius and Garrison, there’s sure to be some monstrous bass work.

Fans can get a glimpse of the upcoming release with the single “The Message is Love,” which melds New York jazz and East Coast funk with the G-Funk sound of Long Beach, California.

“‘The Message Is Love’ is about evoking that feeling. The greatest thing you can feel is the energy, appreciation, and the act of just love for love’s sake,” says Blackman Santana. “Not for any agenda, just because it’s beautiful, and that’s what the creator is: complete love. Love for love’s sake, no other reason. That’s where the title came from and where the energy of the song comes from.”

Coherence will be out on July 31st. It’s open to pre-order on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (Apple Music, and Amazon Music).
