Linda May Han Oh Turns Bud Powell’s “Hallucinations” Into an Upright Bass Showcase

Linda May Han Oh and Melissa Aldana have shared an official performance video for “Hallucinations,” the bebop composition by pianist Bud Powell.

The stripped-down duo setting puts Oh’s upright bass at the center. With no drums, piano, or guitar, she supplies the groove and harmonic foundation while adding counterpoint and trading phrases with Aldana’s tenor saxophone.  “Hallucinations” previews Beneath Lifted Skies, the duo’s new album arriving August 21, 2026 through Biophilia Records. The fifteen-track project draws from jazz standards, bebop compositions, free improvisations, and solo meditations with music by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Sam Rivers, Gigi Gryce, and Billie Holiday. It marks the first album from either musician devoted almost entirely to jazz standards.

This is a dream setting for bass fans. Oh gets enormous room to reshape Powell’s tune while maintaining a deep swing and an immediate musical conversation with Aldana.
