Bad Brains’ Darryl Jenifer Reimagines His Roots on “The Weather Channel”
Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer has returned with a new solo instrumental album called The Weather Channel. Though known for his punk and dub roots, the new record showcases an even wider range of sounds alongside percussionist Ben Perowsky, guitarist Karma “Chogyi” Marco, and keyboardist John Medeski.
“Across 11 tracks, the album presents nine original compositions alongside new interpretations of two Bad Brains songs,” a press release explains. “Punk energy and dub-heavy rhythms remain part of Jenifer’s musical vocabulary, but here they are woven into adventurous ensemble performances shaped by spontaneity, atmosphere, and rhythmic exploration.”
That sense of sonic adventure is encapsulated in “Re-Ignition II,” which reimagines the Bad Brains track (originally written by Jenifer) in a new atmosphere. Heavy, distorted tones punctuate the original riff as it sits more in an R&B vibe.
