BEAT Announces Final North American Tour With Terry Bozzio on Drums

For the past two years, King Crimson alumni Adrian Belew and Tony Levin have been touring with guitarist Steve Vai and drummer Danny Carey as BEAT, celebrating the music of King Crimson’s 80’s era. The quartet has just announced its final North American tour for this fall, but there will be a lineup change.
Danny Carey will be replaced by Terry Bozzio, a drummer known for his work with Frank Zappa, U.K., and Missing Persons. A statement from the band explains that Carey “remains an important part of the BEAT family, and simply his Tool commitments prevent him from being available for this upcoming run in the Fall.”
“For those of you who’ve seen BEAT live, it’s important to note we’ll be adding some material from ’90s Crim to our Fall tour,” says Belew. “Along with the addition of superman drummer Terry Bozzio, we feel this will result in a new experience for our audience — and this may be your last chance to hear this band play these songs. We’re very excited to play for you again. Don’t miss it!”
Vai also weighed in on the changeup, saying, “Terry is one of the truly legendary drummers of our time, whose remarkable career and unique musical voice make him the perfect artist to join us for this tour. He brings his own extraordinary artistry to BEAT, and that’s something worth celebrating. Our deepest appreciation goes to our brother Danny Carey—a true BEAT-Poet. His extraordinary musicianship, generosity, humor, and explosive creativity helped establish BEAT as something far beyond a tribute. He helped create its identity. While Tool commitments keep him from joining us this fall, he remains an essential part of our family.”
Bozzio appeared on Vai’s 1993 album Sex & Religion. He also has a history of playing with Levin in the supergroup power trio Bozzio Levin Stevens and a quartet called HoBoLeMa formed by Allan Holdsworth.
BEAT’s final North American run will begin October 9th in Santa Cruz, California. It will head east and as far north as Montreal, Quebec, Canada before coming down the East Coast. The end of November will see the group zip across the South to wrap up the 40-date excursion in Riverside, California. Artist Pre Sale begins August 4th at 12pm ET with the password BEATTOUR. General on-sale for most shows begins Friday, August 7th at 10am local time.
Since BEAT performs music from King Crimson’s 80’s era, Tony Levin switches between his electric bass and the Chapman Stick to cover all the music. Watch his mesmerizing playing on “Elephant Talk” from 1981’s Discipline.
