Charles Berthoud and Mike Dawes Trade Melodies on “Belle Insomnie”

Charles Berthoud and Mike Dawes teamed up for a gorgeous take on “Belle Insomnie,” and there is a lot going on here.

Charles is playing a fretless 6 string Le Fay bass, while Mike handles the acoustic guitar. Both players get into some serious multihand tapping, trading parts and weaving around each other in a way that looks effortless. The setting is pretty great too. They filmed this at The Mount Without in Bristol, a former church with nearly 900 years of history.

Charles also breaks out an ebow at one point, adding another layer of texture to an already beautiful arrangement. It is technical, musical, and a lot of fun to watch.
