John Ferrara’s Two-Handed Tapping Drives Mono Means One’s “Creatures of Symmetry”

Mono Means One has returned with Creatures of Symmetry, a collection of seven instrumental tracks driven by John Ferrara‘s bass lines. The bassist, also known for his work with Consider the Source, fleshed out his solo bass compositions for the project. Flanked by drummer Rob Madore and keyboardist Isaac Young, Ferrara leads the charge with his otherworldly two-handed tapping technique to create emotional melodies and heavy, odd-meter riffs.

“I think of it as if [Radiohead’s] Thom Yorke and [Meshuggah’s] Tomas Haake had a baby — one that just looks a little more like Yorke,” says Ferrara. “I took solo bass pieces of mine and reimagined them. These songs had so much potential to sound huge, nuanced and powerful, and I think the three of us achieved exactly that. I am very proud of this album, from the richness of the compositions to the playing and the production!”

The album’s direction is encapsulated in its title track, which clocks in at over 10 minutes. “Creatures of Symmetry” is an epic sonic adventure that features Ferrara’s “tremolo tapping” technique, odd-time grooves, and singable melodies. The progressive track has a chaotic bridge that builds into a solo section for each bandmember to showcase their skills.
