Oteil Burbridge Breaks Out His New King Tut Short-Scale Bass for a John Scofield Classic

John Scofield is revisiting his electric jazz catalog with his Electrospective project and Oteil Burbridge is bringing some new gear along for the ride.  Burbridge is playing his new “King Tut” six-string short-scale bass through an Epifani bass rig.

Built by Leo Elliott of Scarlet Fire Guitars, King Tut features a 30.75-inch scale, a lightweight design and a simplified control layout with just volume and pickup blend knobs. Burbridge debuted the custom instrument in October during the Electrospective tour.

Burbridge is also a longtime Epifani user. In our recent interview, he discussed his appreciation for the company’s amplification, including the Boost Da Bass DI preamp, which has become an important part of his sound.  That Interview HERE.

The song itself has plenty of bass history. “Trim” originally appeared on Scofield’s 1987 album Blue Matter with Gary Grainger on bass and Dennis Chambers on drums. This time, Burbridge joins drummer Adam Deitch in the rhythm section.

Scofield’s Electrospective project revisits material from several periods of his career, including Blue Matter, A Go Go, and Überjam.
