Driftwood: Bass Sticks/Lemonade
I’ve been lucky to see Driftwood play a couple of times, so when my pal Bill Rudd sent me this performance from this year’s Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance, I stopped to watch. The clip begins with “Bass Sticks.”
William Battline: I Believe in Father Christmas
No Treble reader William Battline sent us this video with his beautiful piccolo bass arrangement of Greg Lake’s “I Believe in Father Christmas.”
Frowin Ickler (with Aleen and Joe Whitney): Funky Santa Claus is Coming to Town
No Treble readers never disappoint. Frowin Ickler sent us this video in celebration of the holidays, which he describes as “Funky Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” He’s digging his Fender MonoNeon on this one, and we’re digging his solo!
Brittany Frompovich: Silent Night / The First Noel
No Treble contributor Brittany Frompovich is helping us get into the holiday spirit with a new video. Check out her take on Alun Vaughan’s versions of “Silent Night” and “The First Noel.”
Stuart Clayton: Come On, Come Over
Stuart Clayton is back with another bass cover/transcription video, and this one is “devilishly challenging to play accurately,” he says. From Jaco Pastorius’s debut album, Stuart plays through “Come On, Come Over” on his Mayones Viking bass.
Preoccupations: Ricochet
Preoccupations visited the KEXP studio in late October and performed four tunes. This was another new musical discovery for me, and I’m digging their sound. Here’s the band, with bassist/vocalist Matt Flegel, performing “Ricochet.”
Snarky Puppy: Pineapple
Snarky Puppy’s “Empire Central” has been on my turntable a lot lately, and it is one of my favorite records of 2022. They’ve just dropped another video from the recording session. “Pineapple” was co-written by Mike “Maz” Maher and Michael League.
Cory Wong: Kenni and The Jets (Live at The Van Buren)
Here’s a great clip of Cory Wong and the Wongnotes performing “Kenni and The Jets,” which features Jake Botts on bari sax and the rock-solid backing of bassist Sonny T. Tenor saxophonist Kenni Holmen even gets in on the action. The combination is excellent.
Vulfpeck: New Guru
Vulfpeck dropped another video from their upcoming album, Schvitz. “New Guru” was written by vocalist Jacob Jeffries Jack Stratton (on keys) and features vocalist Antwaun Stanley. Joe Dart lays down a funky line behind it all.
Christian Houmann: Moment So Close
Christian Houmann has released a new album, and he shared a video of his band performing one of the songs. “Moment So Close” features some beautiful fretless work by Christian.
Karina Rykman with Mike Gordon: City Kids
Karina Rykman has been covering the East Coast on her latest winter tour. On December 3rd, she performed in Burlington, Vermont, and welcomed Phish bassist Mike Gordon onto the stage for an extended version of “City Kids.”
The Winery Dogs: Xanadu
The Winery Dogs recently announced a new album is coming. Yesterday, they dropped the video for their first single. Here’s Billy Sheehan, Richie Kotzen, and Mike Portnoy performing “Xanadu” from “III.”
