YYNOT: Prelude/Freewill (Live)
It is great to see YYNOT gaining so much traction with fans. The band performed at The Diesel in Detroit on October 27th, and once again, they’re putting out some great concert videos. Here’s their performance of Rush’s “Prelude” and “Freewill”, which once again finds Tim Starace handling the gritty bass and the keys on the tunes.
Nicki Tedesco: Halloween Theme
It’s Halloween, so it’s only fitting that we present you with a creepy bass rendition of the theme from Halloween by Nicki Tedesco to set the mood. The bassist doubles on upright and electric basses, using a few effects to help summon the spirit of Michael Myers. Happy Halloween!
Scary Pockets: Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Scary Pockets keeps bringing the (re-imagined) hits with a new video. This time around, they take on the Bobby McFerrin tune, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Sam Wilkes is back on the bass with the band for this one, which is fronted by guest vocalist Nikka Costa.
Jesús Rico Pérez: John Francis (Michael Manring Cover)
Jesús Rico Pérez is back! In this new video, he takes on a recent tune by Michael Manring, which appeared on the official soundtrack for the film, Beneath The Bassline. Manring wrote the song as a dedication to Jaco Pastorius. You can check out the full soundtrack here, including Manring’s version.
Victor Wooten: KNKX Public Radio Performance
Back in August, we featured a video of Victor Wooten and Bob Franceschini performing “Funky D” live in the studio. Now KNKX has shared the full segment for us to enjoy.
Cory Wong: Juke On Jelly
We’ve seen Cory Wong’s impressive guitar skills on many Vulfpeck videos, as well as his own solo project. Now we get to hear him lay it down on the bass. In this track, Cory handles not only the bass, but also the guitar, percussion, piano/keys, and vocals, along with KATIS on lead vocals.
The Omnific: Objets de Vertu
The Omnific is an Australian progressive instrumental band with two basses and a drummer, so of course I dig it. Matt Fack and Toby Peterson-Stewart handle all of the melodic and harmonic content while drummer Jerome Lematua holds the beat. “Objets de Vertu” showcases the bassists’ prowess on the instrument while creating a cool groove.
Marcus Miller with Selah Sue: Que Sera Sera
Marcus Miller just shared an excellent video showcasing one of the tunes on his new album, Laid Black. Joined by vocalist Selah Sue, here’s their take on “Que Sera Sera.”
Metallica: To Live Is To Die, Live
Metallica is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their album …And Justice For All by posting live versions of each song from the album. They’ve just posted a clip of “To Live is To Die” from its first ever (and only) full-length live performance in 2011. The song is mostly instrumental and was written as a tribute to Cliff Burton, who...
Cassius Lambert: Aralia
Cassius Lambert sent us this video of his solo bass tune, “Aralia.” His composition skills and use of effects combine to create one stunning soundscape.
The Band Geeks: Close To The Edge
I wasn’t familiar with The Band Geeks until I spotted this video by them. And I’m glad I watched it. In this clip, the band (with Richie Castellano on bass) performs a masterful cover of “Close To The Edge” by Yes.
Christian McBride’s New Jawn: Pier One Import
KNKX Public Radio posted this video last month, with this description: “When great musicians push themselves to do something different, it can be an exciting prospect. Christian McBride’s New Jawn quartet is a great example of that. And when those musicians really enjoy that challenge, that’s when the magic of jazz happens.” Here’s the band in a live performance of...
