Berklee recently celebrated the music of trombonist Hal Crook (who graduated Berklee in 1971). The lineup for this was pretty impressive, with Berklee alum Esperanza Spalding on vocals and bass, saxophonist Chris Cheek, pianist Leo Genovese, Lionel Loueke and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Jeff Berlin shared this terrific clip on Facebook of a live performance in Buenos Aires. In this video, the trio of Berlin, guitarist Scott Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham perform Cobham’s “Stratus”. The original tune was on Cobham’s Spectrum, with Leland Sklar. Such an unbelievably great bass line on this one.

I love musicians that experiment and think outside the box. Here’s a great example of that with a video by Niodel. The duo of bassist Paolo Cipollini and drummer Mattia Bellotti get their sound by mixing in live electronics and “sound expansions” to create eerie and sublime sonic textures. Bassist Ben Titus sent in this awesome looping arrangement of the Imagine Dragons hit “Radioactive”, and I’m glad he did. He gets a gorgeous tone from his six-string and creates a perfect pad with his chord voicings.
