Philip Smith: Funky Bass Scratch Track
Bassist Philip Smith posts these awesome “scratch tracks” with some great grooves. This one, simply titled “Funky Bass Scratch Track” Philip says, “This is a scratch track (mistakes and all) for a tune I’m putting together. Let me know what you think. Maybe I can do a colab or something with some tasteful YouTube drummers and guitarists out there.” Drop...
Mike Flynn: “Very Early” Fretless Bass Solo
Here’s Mike Flynn performing a tasty fretless bass solo to the Bill Evans tune, “Very Early”. Mike shared that this is one of his all time favorite standards. He’s performing with his Jeff Chapman custom fretless, with a little bit of reverb and a small amount of chorus to achieve a stereo effect.
Marcus Miller: Power, Live at the 2008 Lugano Jazz Festival
Marcus Miller is one bad dude, and here’s just a little more evidence. In this clip, taken from Switzerland’s Lugano Jazz Festival in 2008, the bass icon rips through the aptly named tune “Power.” The rest of his band includes Alex Han on Saxophone, Jason “JT” Thomas on Drums, and Federico Gonzales Pena on Keyboards.
Richard Bona: “Teen Town”, Live
Jaco Pastorius wrote it and performed it. Many bassists have re-imagined it. Richard Bona may have turned in my favorite remake version of “Teen Town” yet with this live performance. I love what he does with the fretless. What do you think? Drop a note in the comments below.
Steely Dan: Kid Charlemagne (Live)
Here’s a great live performance of Steely Dan’s tune “Kid Charlemagne”, for VH-1’s Storytellers. In this version, bassist Tom Barney really brings it!
Suzi Quatro: Strict Machine
Bassist Suzi Quatro started her musical career at the age of fourteen, playing in the all-female band, The Pleasure Seekers and Cradle, with her sisters. Her father got her started, giving Quatro as 1957 Fender Precision as her first bass. Quatro has another claim to fame: starring in the sitcom Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero, the younger sister to Pinky...
Jeff Andrews: Live Bass Solo with the Mike Stern Band

Jaco Pastorius Big Band: Three Views of a Secret, Live
One of the greatest tunes ever composed, and no stranger to Jaco Pastorius fans. Continuing our celebration of Jaco’s birthday today, enjoy:
Viaceslav Svedov: “Tom Sawyer” All-Bass Cover
Viaceslav Svedov slows things down a bit (for him) with this awesome all-bass cover of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”, in his latest video. This guy can do it all.
Andrew Gouche: You Brought the Sunshine
Here’s an awesome clip of Gospel bass guru Andrew Gouche, getting funky in church with some serious talent including saxophonist Donald Hayes with Tim Carmon, Gorden Campbell, Vadim Zhilberstein, Jackie Gouche, Tracy Brown, Chris Bolton, Mavuto Carpenter and Theresa Jones. Gouche masterfully backs up each player, building their solos to incredible heights while getting his own licks in at all...
Nathan Navarro and Dylan Patrello (aka Dot): Follow Me
Bassist Nathan Navarro teamed up with singer Dylan Patrello to form the electronic duo Dot, even though the pair live in different parts of the world and come from different musical backgrounds. “Dylan and Nathan collaborate online while being thousands of miles away as Dylan is most often in Texas and Brazil while Nathan spends time in California and Massachusetts,”...
Doug Johns: “Pocket Fulla Nasty” – Live
What the world needs is more Doug Johns videos… especially like this one. Here’s Doug with drummer Chris Ceja, performing “Pocket Fulla Nasty” live at CPE Sound in Chicago, IL. The tune can be found on the 2008 release of the same name. Be sure to check out our interview with Doug (after the video, of course).
