“Starting Over Felt Crazy”: Paul McCartney’s New Book Dives into Wings’ Wild Ride

Paul McCartney - Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run

Following the dissolution of the Beatles, Paul McCartney dove into a solo career with the albums McCartney and Ram in 1970 and 1971, respectively. The latter album was followed by the creation of the band Wings, which he formed with his wife Linda McCartney, drummer Denny Seiwell, and guitarist Denny Laine. Thus began a decade of music with seven studio albums and many hit songs.

Now McCartney is telling the story of the band in an upcoming book called Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run. Written with Ted Widmer, the book is drawn from over 500,000 words and hours of interviews with McCartney and people involved with the band.

“I’m so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book,” McCartney states. “Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better I thought, ‘OK this is really good.’ We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way The Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz.”

Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run will be 528 pages long and will include 150 photographs, many of which are previously unseen. It will be released on November 4th and is currently open to pre-order.
