Paul McCartney Returns With New Solo Album, “The Boys of Dungeon Lane”

Paul McCartney has returned with his 18th solo studio album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. Produced by Andrew Watt, it features poignant notes of nostalgia as he recalls his childhood in Liverpool on tracks like “Days We Left Behind.” But that doesn’t mean that he’s resting on his laurels. In fact, it all kicked off with finding something new.
“The Boys of Dungeon Lane was first brought into existence five years ago when Paul met producer Andrew Watt for a cup of tea and an exchange of ideas,” McCartney’s website explains. “While playing around on the guitar during the meeting, Paul happened upon a chord that even he didn’t recognize. Undeterred and driven by his experimental nature, Paul carried on changing one note, then another, until he had a three-chord sequence, which Watt suggested they should record.”
That became the opening track, “As You Lie There.” McCartney plays 90% of the music on the album, including the mysterious chord and the prominent bass line on the track. The song balances McCartney’s signature sentinmentality and a larger rock chorus.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane is available now on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (Apple Music, and Amazon Music).
