From “Six Degrees” to “Systematic Chaos”: Dream Theater’s New Box Set Revisits a Pivotal Era

Dream Theater released their 16th studio album, Pansomnia, earlier this year. Although they are showing no signs of slowing down, they are reflecting on their illustrious career by continuing their retrospective box set series.
The band has just dropped Dream Theater Volume 2, which continues the discography collection started last year. The new 8-LP collection follows up last year’s Volume 1 with the next four albums in their discography: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002), Train of Thought (2003), Octavarium (2005), and Systematic Chaos (2007).
“‘Vol. 2’ highlights Dream Theater’s journey through the 2000s, reflecting not only their continuous sonic evolution but also their success in carving out space for progressive metal on international charts,” a press release explains.
Of course, the monstrous bass work of John Myung ties all of the prog rock goodness together. Among the tracks is his epic performance on “Panic Attack” from Octavarium, which starts with the bass introducing the main riff:
Dream Theater Volume 2 is available exclusively through the Rhino website in North America and select Warner Music Group stores internationally. It is limited to just 2,500 sets worldwide.
