Just Released: Tony Levin Shines in King Crimson’s 1982 Munich Performance of “Indiscipline”
A newly surfaced video shows King Crimson at the height of their Discipline-era energy performing “Indiscipline” live at Munich’s Alabamahalle on September 29, 1982. The broadcast-quality clip is a masterclass in interplay with Tony Levin delivering a commanding performance on his Chapman Stick.
Levin’s Stick work is front and center as he drives the song’s shifting time signatures while covering both the bass foundation and melodic counterlines. His fluid tapping locks in perfectly with Bill Bruford’s inventive mix of acoustic and electronic drums while Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew weave their interlocking guitar parts over the top.
The live take has a sharper edge than the studio version with Adrian Belew stretching his vocal delivery for maximum drama. Levin’s tone and presence add a deep and resonant force to the performance making this just-released footage essential viewing for King Crimson fans and bass lovers everywhere.
