Radiohead Drops Surprise Live Album: Colin Greenwood’s Bass Powers Hail to the Thief Performances

Radiohead Hail to the Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009

Any day you get a new Radiohead album is a good day, but a surprise drop will make your week. The iconic band has released Hail to the Thief Live Recordings 2003 – 2009, which recreates their sixth studio album with live cuts from Amsterdam, London, Dublin, and Buenos Aires.

Although they dropped it without warning, vocalist Thom Yorke gave some background on how the project came about during the process of making an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

“In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theater production, I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs,” he explained. “I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognized us, and it helped me find a way forward. We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.”

Colin Greenwood‘s bass lines set the mood for much of Hail to the Thief, especially on driving tracks like “2 + 2 = 5” and “Myxomatosis.” Check out the band’s wild energy with the live video for “There, There” taken from their Buenos Aires performance in March of 2009.
