David Sutkin’s Meta Guitars Pragma Bass Blends Modern Design with Personal Touch

Bass Upfront founder David Sutkin has a boatload of amazing basses. This week, we’re featuring the latest four-string in his collection: the Meta Guitars Pragma “Sutkin Signature.” The new model is the first double cutaway body from the French bass specialists.
“This unique design is a headless, multi-scale bass, handcrafted by Fred from Meta Guitars that was conceived to meet David’s demand for full access to the 24th fret and a powerful-sounding yet articulate and versatile instrument,” Meta shares. “With this in mind, a new model emerges that embodies precision, comfort, and limitless playability. Every inch of this bass is carefully crafted, and every detail meticulously cared.”
The bass, which weighs in at 6.6 pounds, features set-neck construction with a red alder body, a 5A flamed maple neck, and a 3A flamed ebony fingerboard. Meta writes that the body shape was sculpted to fit the player’s body, blending form and function to “feel like an extension of your own movement.” The 24 frets are marked with tubular aluminum side dots as well as Sutkin’s signature lion head logo at the 12th fret.
The Pragma Sutkin Signature is equipped with DiMarzio Relentless P/J pickups, featuring two volume knobs and a master tone control. Another interesting feature is in its hardware.
“This bass features the new proprietary saddles with a refined design that matches the high quality of the bass,” the company explains. “The materials are wisely chosen to deliver a clear, massive, and focused tone without compromising the lightweight. The tuning is smooth, and the adjustments are easy to reach and can be done with only one key for all the setups. Last but not least, the anodizing and coating are made at the workshop, allowing an infinite combination of colors and textures.”
