Bass Gym: A Melodic Funk Pick Workout Using Dorian and Lydian Modes
This track was written during a visit to my grandmother’s house, when I had a free afternoon, pick in hand. After a plate of delicious homemade lentil soup, I was graced with a surprise visit from my muse.
The groove is based on the E minor Dorian scale (E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D) with a modulation to C major, where we use a Lydian scale (C, D, E, F#, G, A, B).
Technically, the most challenging part is the fast sextuplet melodic embellishment, where you tap two notes with the left hand. In the right hand, again, you have to be careful about skipping strings, as the whole piece is built on a combination of octaves, sevenths, sixths, and fifths, creating a rich melodic texture to the groove.
