Bill Laswell Needs Our Help: GoFundMe Launched for Visionary Bassist and Producer

Visionary bassist and producer Bill Laswell has spent his entire life creating music that has changed the face of our culture. By following the Muse, he’s worked on over 3,000 recordings in styles ranging from funk and jazz to ambient and world music. He’s worked with artists like Brian Eno, Mick Jagger, Peter Gabriel, Afrika Bambaataa, and more. Notably, his work on Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit” helped bring turntablism into the mainstream. (Read the whole story in our 2014 interview.)
Now, he needs our help.
Lawell’s health has been deteriorating over the past few years, leaving him unable to work in addition to mounting medical bills. A GoFundMe has been set up in his name to support him during his time of need.
“He is no longer able to perform, travel, or sustain the level of work that once supported him. Bill is still in recovery, and while we believe he can improve, it is taking much longer than we had hoped,” the campaign explains. “He continues to need regular medical support, basic living expenses, and day-to-day care. Things most people take for granted — rent, phone, medical supplies — have become ongoing challenges. While he still works when he can, his condition limits him greatly.”
The campaign had an initial goal of $5,000, which has been met. However, please consider donating to continue supporting an artist who gave his life to music.
