“Wilco Live (Yellow)” Captures John Stirratt’s Warm, Inventive Bass Lines

Wilco kicked off their new “An Evening with Wilco” tour on April 23rd by adding another installment to their Live Playlist series. Wilco Live (Yellow) features 22 live cuts recorded between 2019 and 2024, with performances captured everywhere from Mexico to Iceland.
The song list spans the band’s career, with tracks like “She’s a Jar” from 1999’s summerteeth alongside “Levee” from their latest studio album, 2023’s Cousin.
Bassist John Stirratt is prominently featured on the cover as well as in the music. His warm tone adds depth and intimacy to the band’s sonic palette, while his creative lines weave the chords together. In a 2024 interview, Noise Floor’s Nick Calvino asked him about his melodic approach and how he goes beyond playing roots, fourths, and fifths.
“I think you look back to when you’re younger and you’re thinking so much less. To try and keep that spirit alive in whatever you do,” he said. “Whether it’s bass or a lot of things in life. It’s not just fearlessness but maybe it’s commitment. Certainly having the people I’ve played with – whether it’s Jeff’s songs and overall vision – I’ve been able to learn from so many people and have this fertile music framework to bounce around in and that’s the luckiest aspect of my career, for sure.”
Hear his approach on the blossoming album opener, “Infinite Surprise”:
