Sublime Begins Its “Fourth Era” With “Until the Sun Explodes”

Sublime has released a new album called Until the Sun Explodes. The three-piece is now fronted by Jakob Nowell, son of Sublime’s late singer Bradley Nowell, who calls it the band’s “fourth era.” Following his father’s death, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh formed Long Beach Dub Allstars, then Sublime with Rome, which lasted from 2009 to 2024.
Until the Sun Explodes marks the first album under the Sublime banner in 30 years.
“So I consider us, like V4 of Sublime,” Nowell explained to Billboard. “I hope people consider it a renaissance. That’s definitely the goal with this record and all the sounds we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to perform up there. It’s just a fun, messy, chaotic punk band that your parents used to love and showed you, or that you just discovered two years ago and you love it for your own reasons now.”
Throughout each iteration, Wilson has delivered bass lines that served as their own melodies. Until the Sun Explodes continues that tradition as he blends rock, reggae, punk, and more.
Check out his line on “Can’t Miss You” – and hear Nowell’s uncanny vocal similarities to his father.
Until the Sun Explodes is out now on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (Apple Music, and Amazon Music).
