Michael Pipoquinha took the stage at jazzahead! 2026 with the bass right where it belongs…up front.
The Brazilian bassist and vocalist led a quartet with Thiago Almeida on keys, Josué Lopez on saxophone, and Renato Galv on drums. Pipoquinha appears to be playing a six string Tagima bass through what looks like a Markbass rig and the setup gives him plenty of room to move between deep groove, vocals, and melodic work. Michael’s is a stellar bassist and if your vibe is Brazilian roots, serious chops, and a bassist leading leading the whole ride, youll want to check this out.
