Hiromi Revives The Trio Project with James Genus on Bass

Hiromi Trio Project 2026

After years of focusing on her Sonicwonder band, jazz piano virtuoso Hiromi is bringing the Trio Project back to the forefront, but it won’t look quite the same. It will be the group’s first foray since the passing of bass icon Anthony Jackson, who died late last year. Hiromi and drummer Simon Phillips will be joined by bassist James Genus.

Genus is no stranger to playing with the world’s greatest pianists. He’s played alongside Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Michel Camilo, not to mention all the other jazz stars on his CV. You may also recognize him as the house bassist for the Saturday Night Live band.

The Trio Project will begin their tour on October 4th at SF JAZZ in San Francisco, California. After a couple more West Coast dates, they’ll fly to Hawaii to play at the Blue Note before heading to Minnesota and Ohio to complete the U.S. portion of the tour. The European run begins October 29th in Lugano, Switzerland, and will wrap up November 10th in Prague, Czech Republic.

The group released four albums between 2011 and 2016 that pushed the boundaries for what three instruments could do. According to International Music Network, Hiromi has a new recording with the trio, though further details have not been released.

“I want to treat the three instruments as three pieces of an orchestra, and extend the sound,” Hiromi said of the project.
