Magnus Sjöquist: Visa från utanmyra
Ubass connoisseur Magnus Sjöquist sent us an all-bass version of a Swedish folk song called “Visa från utanmyra”, and it’s beautiful.
“My version is inspired by the lovely version by Swedish pianist Jan Johansson and upright bassist Georg Riedel,” he told us. “It is featured on the album Jazz på svenska (Jazz in Swedish) released in 1964.”
Sjöquist plays both the melody and bass line on a custom 5-string fretless Ubass that features a prototype string set. “It is tuned E A D G C and gives me a nice range for melody and solo playing,” he shares.

Beautiful arrangement! Jazz på Svenska is by far my favourite jazz-album, it’s always fun to hear new ways of playing great songs. Nice pictures and sceneries as well!
Wat are the strings?
Beautiful, Magnus! Transported me into another world there for a minute. Great video, too.
