Bass of the Week: Justin Chancellor’s Warwick Custom Shop Masterbuilt Streamer Stage II
Tool’s Justin Chancellor has always been known for his impeccable style and tone. While he is typically associated with a Wal bass, this week we’re taking a look at his new Streamer Stage II from the Warwick Custom Shop.
The bass is built with neck through construction with Warwick’s “hidden neck” option, which means the thru-neck is only seen from the back. Its seven-piece neck is made from wenge with Afzelia strips, while its body and matching headstock are a gorgeous Bubinga Pommelé. The fretboard is Tigerstripe Ebony with white dot inlays and illuminated side-dots for visibility on a dark stage.
For electronics, Chancellor’s bass is fitted with a pair of custom Nordstrand MM-style pickups called the Big Blademan, which were specially designed for the bassist. They’re matched to a Nordstrand 3B-5B active/passive preamp with volume, blend, tone, mid, and treble/bass knobs. The mid-frequency knob has a push/pull function to change its frequency.
While this video uses the track “Schism”, which doesn’t feature the new bass, it does have plenty of beautiful photos of Chancellor’s new axe:
