Mike Gordon Releases OGOGO, Readies Fall Tour
Mike Gordon’s fifth solo album, OGOGO, is now available. The Phish bassist tapped longtime partners Scott Murawski (guitar/vocals), Robert Walter (keyboards), John Morgan Kimock (drums) and Craig Myers (percussion) for the record, although it wasn’t the same old recording session for the musicians. Producer Shawn Everett helped to coax new sounds out of them.
“All five of us decided not to do what we had done before, but to be fresher and try to find our own voices,” Gordon explained. “That started happening in some jams… I want things to be interesting in a way that would serve the song. A lot of Shawn’s stuff is experimental but not at the expense of the groove. Every instrument and every voice was recorded in a way that I’ve never seen before.”
That included recording the hi-hat with Apple earbuds, recording key parts into a toy keyboard, and singing into a tin can. Not every sound made it, but many did. Get a load of some of the new sound with the official audio to “Whirlwind”:
Gordon and his band will be hitting the road in support of the new album this month. OGOGO is available now on CD, vinyl, and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
