At Long Last, Rush Releases “Clockwork Angels”
We first reported Rush’s announcement for Clockwork Angels a little over two years ago. At that time, the band released two songs to radio stations and as digital downloads before hitting the road for their “Time Machine” tour in 2010 and 2011, where they performed both tunes live each night. The trio completed the album after the tour was completed.
Clockwork Angels is the band’s 20th studio effort, and first in five years to offer new material. This also marks their first album with their new label, Anthem/Roadrunner records and reunites the band with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz, who worked on Snakes & Arrows.
Clockwork Angels is a concept album – not quite in the same category as 2112 or Hemispheres, but lyrically, the album “chronicles a young man’s quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams”.
A novelization of the album is being penned by science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson, who is working with drummer/lyricist Neil Peart. The release date for the book is currently scheduled for September 1, 2012.
In an interview with the CBC, bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee said, “We wanted to see what the fruits of a long-term relationship can do. Here’s a band 38 years on and we are pushing it, to see where we can go as a band.”
“What does Rush mean to me? To me it’s this little group of experimenters. We’re this group of guys who want to see what we can do. It’s the simplest way I can put it,” he added.
As is typical for the band, the album’s cover art is as clever as it is beautiful… it displays the time 9:12, or 21:12, in reference to the band’s album, 2112.
Rush is set to hit the road once again, this time in support of the new album. Check out our story on the tour, which includes complete tour dates.
