Brian Bromberg Releases Hendrix and Jobim Tribute Albums in U.S.

Brian Bromberg: Bromberg Plays HendrixHot on the heels of his new album Compared to That, bassist Brian Bromberg is paying homage to two of his musical heroes with Bromberg Plays Hendrix and In the Spirit of Jobim. The albums were originally recorded for Japan’s King Records, but are now available in the U.S. via Artistry Music.

“Even though people know me as a jazz musician, I was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan as a kid,” Bromberg explains. “It meant something to me inside but I really didn’t know why.” The entire collection of cover songs is performed entirely by Bromberg and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, with the bassist utilizing everything from upright bass to acoustic to fretless basses. The duo tackle all of Hendrix’s hits, including “Fire,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Purple Haze,” and “Hey Joe.”

Brian Bromberg: In the Spirit of JobimOn the other hand is In the Spirit of Jobim, which pays tribute to Bossa Nova master Antonio Carlos Jobim. Half Jobim tunes and half originals, Bromberg wanted to express his playing while keeping true to the Brazilian style. In order to do this, he had a nylon-stringed acoustic bass guitar made with piccolo tuning to resemble the sound of a nylon-string guitar. It may sound a bit “treble-y”, but don’t worry – he still holds down the low-end with his impeccable upright playing.

In the Spirit of Jobim Track List:

  1. One Note Samba
