Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird”: Isolated Bass & Drums
The 1973 studio version of “Free Bird” appeared on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s debut album, from Pronounced ‘Leh-‘Nérd ‘Skin-‘Nérd and featured Ed King on bass and Bob Burns on drums.
Here’s the duo in isolation on the track, showing just how a drummer/bassist pairing should be.
King is reportedly playing his 1964 Fender Jazz on the tune. Sweet.
oh yeah.. ME LIKEY!
Cool as FCUK!
I like the bass-line far better than the song! Especially the Chris Squire influenced riffage in the coda…
Very cool although I still dig the song a lot, too…
its about time bass and drums came out of the shadows.. :)
We always have been in control !!
Their just to dumb to know it !!
“too” dumb.
while we’re at it, “they’re”… ;)
I never knew the bass line was that damn cool! Thanks for the post!
I never knew Ed King played the Bass line!
wow so this wasn’t Leon…i didn’t know that either. something sounds off about it though :-/
Leon might have made the bassline up. I believe he left the band for awhile. Ed said nothing but good things about Leon.
What an awesome bass player this guy was – been listening to skynyrd since I was young and it’s fair to say, every track is a masterpiece of bass playing.
Very underrated bass player. :-i
Now, there’s TEAM work! Perfectly, done.
It’s about time they could do this ,I asked when I was a young drummer why they couldn’t do this to learn ,now it’s happening finally
Sounds like a Rickenbacker
I was thinking the same thing.
Snare snaps nicely, kick could use just a bit more punch. Great song.
