At Last: Rush and Deep Purple Nominated for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

For many fans, this is a story of “too little, too late”, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has finally taken a step to putting Rush and Deep Purple into the Hall. The two bands, plus Public Enemy and N.W.A. are first time ballots, along with 11 other groups returning once again for consideration.

Deep Purple and Rush

Fans of Rush and Deep Purple have long considered each band’s exclusion from Hall a major oversight, citing each group’s successful run of albums, sales and longevity. Many fans – and many No Treble readers here – have gone beyond that, saying they’d prefer that the band reject the nomination.

Rush has issued a statement from all three members, saying “We are honored to be among the nominees for this year’s Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. We are especially thrilled for the many, many dedicated RUSH fans to whom this nomination is so very important. – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart.”

Clearly, the trio knows the importance of this to the fans, and they’re taking a calmer approach. Lifeson once told Billboard, “It kind of has nothing to do with us, you know? We feel there are even other bands that should get in there before us, so we just really don’t worry about it.”

Rolling Stone is reporting that “for the first time ever, fans get to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 5th, you can vote for the nominees you’d like to see inducted. Pick up to five acts – the top five vote-getters will comprise a ‘fan’s ballot’ that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class of 2013. The results will be announced in mid-December.” Fan voting takes place on

The winners will be selected by a vote of 600 artists, music historians and music industry members, in addition to the fan voting. The groups will be honored on April 18, 2013 at the Hall’s ceremony in Los Angeles.

Should be interesting.

  1. Even though our vote doesn’t count for a whole lot (I could be wrong), I’m pretty sure they’re both shoe-ins.

Besides, we need them for when Kraftwerk finally unleashes their German robot army on the rock and roll hall of fame.

  2. Much too little. Much too late. These bands are supposed to sit back seat compared to the Beastie Boys that are already in? Sorry, I would never visit the R&R HoF after that. I will instead listen to my new Clockwork Angels 185g vinyl record in all of its pure analog perfection.

  3. Everyone agrees, too little, too late. Rush is too classy to refuse entry, if won. For one of the best takes on this, look on Youtube for the Colbert Report’s interview with Rush a few years ago. Priceless!

  4. Kudos to Rush, and I hope the Deep Purple nomination will also include Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Tommy Bolin, Rod Evans, Nick Simper, Steve Morse, Joe Lynn Turner, and Don Airey: all of whom made major contributions to the legacy of band over the years.

  6. wow, I don’t know whether to cry or scream, so tired of the threesome getting ignored.

  7. Well, they’ll be in lofty company right beside ABBA, Madonna and Prince. Most certainly worth the wait.
