Charnett Moffett Releases “The Bridge: Solo Bass Works”

Charnett Moffett is reflecting on his instrument and his career on his latest release entitled The Bridge: Solo Bass Works. The record captures the veteran jazz musician alone with his bass in a creative burst that focuses on his past repertoire as well as eight original compositions.

“I wanted to express who I am, carry on the tradition of the greats who preceded me, and also contribute to the art form by challenging myself to construct my own standard of solo bass excellence,” Moffett said of the project. “The idea is to understand music in different dimensions. I think it’s imperative that an artist work in such ways.”

Each track carries significance to the bassist. “Caravan,” which opens the record, pays homage to his 25-year history of performing with the Manhattan Jazz Quintet as the classic Ellington tune was his signature piece with the group.

“Black Codes” hearkens to his time with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet – a group which he joined at just 16 years old.

Other tracks include a mashup of “Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho” with Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” and Charles Mingus’s “Haitian Fight Song.”
