Eric Avery has announced he’s parting ways with the newly revamped Nine Inch Nails, citing exhaustion from touring with Garbage. The band, whose lineup was unveiled in late February by creator Trent Reznor, has not named a replacement.

“It’s with very mixed emotions I tell you all that I’m pulling out of NIN,” Avery wrote on his Facebook page. “I know. Its been a tough call and I don’t know if it’s the right one. But I really want to focus on my musical life here in LA, on film work in particular. As the tour dates kept growing… I just got overwhelmed. I just got home from a year of heavy travel with Garbage, the idea of leaving town for another year and a half, and with all the intensity that Nails demands… fortunately my friend Trent understands all this and appreciated my pulling the plug now instead of deep into 2013 and 14. Go get ’em gentlemen.”

The rest of the band – including King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Ilan Rubin and Telefon Tel Aviv’s Josh Eustis – will soldier on with tour dates slated for the rest of the year starting July 26th at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival.

Reznor and crew are also working on two new songs, though there is no plan for a new album anytime soon.

  1. Oh man, I was looking forward to seeing him tour with NIN. :(

  2. Time to call Twiggy or Danny Lohner, Trent. If they’re not available, I am.

  3. Bring Justin Meldal-Johnsen back! I loved his performance! Or call Chris Chayney, he’s also muthafucka! :)

  4. Somebody is going to have regrets.

  5. How many great bands can this guy quit?

  6. Respectable move. Many would just power through and call it “work”. Its nice to see a great bass player follow his heart.

    • Didn’t even know he was with nin. Always loved this guy, got the chance to see him with janes way nack when. Always respected how he didn’t wsnt to do the shitty reunions. His bass playing is the foundation, and reason for, imho, the great ja songs from the first 3 records. Great player.
