Bass of the Week: Ronin Guitars Prætorian

Ronin Guitars Prætorian Bass - bodyThis week we check out the Ronin Prætorian, a bass built with the environment in mind. Central to the instrument is its “Salvaged Old Growth Redwood” (or S.O.G.R.) body, which the company reclaims from old barns, wineries, and agricultural buildings. Each piece is selected for a tight quarter-sawn grain structure, which the company explains offers improved sound transfer and acoustic clarity.

The Prætorian’s body is matched with a lightweight Honduran mahogany neck that’s topped with a 5A rosewood fingerboard. Its fingerboard radius is hand shaped and comes in 9″, 10″, or 7.25-9.5″ options. The neck contour is also hand shaped in either C, Slight V, or asymmetrical V profiles.

Following the sustainable route, Ronin utilizes “new old stock” Oil in Paper tone capacitors for a smooth tone roll off. The pickups are matched set of the company’s Staple P90’s with either black or cream covers.

  1. Interesting bass design.

  2. Big ass knobs for sure.

  3. I like it; I imagine it sounds as warm as it looks.

  4. Yup looks like it weighs a ton. I thought it was a shortscale as the body is so big. Having said that, I love the way it looks.

  5. The reclaimed old growth redwood we use actually creates basses and guitars that are incredibly lightweight. Most Prætorian basses weight between 7 & 7.8 lbs and are highly resonant. Thank you for the feature Kevin!

  6. You have to applaud this business model even if you don’t like the design – get free scrap wood from Demolished farm buildings and sell it as a feature on a 4 grand bass, a price most people pay for premium materials.

  7. reminds me of the wood paneling they used to put on everything in the early 80s, except much cooler. Wish I knew what those pups sounded like though

  8. looks like a good breed :)
