Bass of the Week: Zoov Guitars Classic 5 Fretless

This week we check out the Classic 5 String Bass from Zoov Guitars, a custom shop based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While each bass is made to order by luthier Nicholas Lacroix, this particular fretless version really stands out for its beauty and attention to detail.

The bass has a beautiful assortment of woods. Its neck is tigerwood is topped with a ziricote fingerboard and purpleheart stringers. The body wings are mahogany topped with gorgeous slabs of purpleheart. Other woods used include lacewood, padauk, and walnut.

This Classic 5 is fitted with a Lane Poor pickup, Sperzel locking tuners, and a Zoov custom bridge. It’s rounded out with a hand rubbed oil and wax finish.

  1. I like the wood, not fan of the shape.

  2. it was going so well till i seen the headstock

  3. Lane Poor?! Is the Legacy Pickups guy doing that or did the company somehow come back from the dead? Oh and yeah thumbs down on that headstock, fugly.

  4. that is without a doubt the worst headstock ever xD. except for that its quite nice, reminds me a bit of a Niels Valentin, only his basses are IMHO more stylishly wacko.

  5. totally dig their website layout though, super clean, good web presence

  6. I can honestly say that this is the first bass I have seen featured that does absolutely NOTHING for me. A schizophrenic cacophony of wood varieties, turnip-shaped body contours, a headstock with all the grace of a bent frying pan …
    Wow, just … wow.
But, it probably makes pretty noises.

  7. What a mess! Not digg’in this at all.

  8. No offense, but it looks like a poorly-executed Carl Thompson knockoff.
