Patax: “Billie Jean” Rumba
Our good friend Sylvain Gros-Desormeaux delivers once again with a incredible video he’s shared with us.
“This band Patax has some serious stuff. DIG THAT TONE!!! The bassist is really amazing. I hope you guys will enjoy watching this an share it to the readers.”
That bassist is Alain Perez, who also handles vocal improvisation in this performance of their unique take on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”. The tune was arranged by Patax band member Jorge Perez and is available on iTunes.
Sylvain closed with a question: “I can’t figure out the type of bass the Alain is playing. Anyone know?” If you do, please share in the comments.

Not digging all the bongos! Too discombobulated.
They are not bongos. They are congas. And they are very important in cuban music.
Hey I got a great idea lets butcher the shit outta of a great song and put on the web.
If Michael could kill himself again this would help out.
Leave classics alone it’s like remaking a classic movie
Imagine Star Wars with congas instead of light sabers
That would be an Accuracy bass (probably a custom Accuracy Scale). http://www.accuracybassesusa.com/
I feel that there were too many congas, also. It may just be the way the track was mixed, though.
TOO MUCH PERCUSSION!!!!
I can’t say I like it…
For those who have nothing good to say about anything please don’t be the negative vibe to any way of expression (arts )for you could be disappointed or not interesting but for others is different; thats why there is color and variations of them .
Polyrhythmic music is definitely not for everybody and it shows in the comments here. As far as I’m concerned, this is awesome.
I start to hate percussion if i listen to long to this crap
I think it’s funny how many people are just raging about all the percussion. The percussion is what makes the song the style it is and I for one think it’s brilliant
I love polyrhytmic music…however I think this particular song was a bad choice….
to me this is beautiful…..so outlandish that it’s awesome lol
I listened to all their MJ covers and I love what they do. Some of the best stuff I’ve heard in a long while.
possibly a custom conklin bass? the wood design looks like somthing they’d do…
several tennis shoes in the dryer
To all you people with negative comments are the scum of this world. It was arranged by a percussionist, so what were you expecting?! You don’t go watching or listen to Steve Vai or Satriani and say “too much guitar”, don’tcha?! What a bunch of morons. And why are you on this page anyways?
