Les Claypool Auctions Pachyderm Bass For Charity

Les Claypool’s Pachyderm Bass Maple 4 String Bass Body

Les Claypool is once again auctioning off his personal bass to benefit Jacob’s Heart, an organization that offers children’s cancer support services. Similar to the instrument he auctioned in 2012, the bass is his own Pachyderm design.

“This particular bass #122312003 was delivered to me on December 29th, 2012,” Claypool states. “I’ve always found that maple instruments have a very forward attack and this bass is one punchy bastard. The bottom end is solid yet has a knocking hollowness to it when the low E is struck with the thumb. The upper pluck is bright and when playing pizzicato the notes leap off the fretboard. This bass is a fog cutter of an instrument with its forward punch and growly finish. I used this bass on specific songs that needed a bit more edge during the Primus tours in March in Mexico, May [through] June in the US and June in Alaska of 2013. With it’s gorgeous birds eye patterned maple and dark chocolate marbled cocobolo wood pick guard, this is our first blonde bass to be offered to the public.”

The bass is built around a birdseye maple body with a matching headstock. The ebony fingerboard is inlaid with LED side fret markers that are also raised for feel. Other features include a Kahler whammy bridge, ebony knobs, an EMG PA pickup, and Sperzal tuners.

Jacob’s Heart helped Claypool’s nephew Baby Matthew and family after the child was diagnosed with a rare form of infant leukemia. Claypool’s Pachyderm bass is up for auction on eBay now until August 14th at 9:27am, PDT.
