George Duke Band with Louis Johnson: Silly Fightin’, Live in Tokyo (1983)
Louis Johnson was one of the most dynamic bassists of all time. The funk pioneer, nicknamed Thunder Thumbs, anchored plenty of hit albums with hits ranging from Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” to Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough.”
Here’s a great clip of him performing “Silly Fightin'” with the George Duke Band in Tokyo during a 1983 concert. After laying down a nasty slap line under the melody, Johnson steps out front to take a killer bass solo that ends with him getting so into it he breaks a string.
In the words of George Duke: “Lord, have mercy!”
