Juan Alderete in Coma Following Bike Accident

Juan Alderete

Bass master and pedal guru Juan Alderete needs your positive energy. His wife Anne posted an update on Instagram explaining that he has been in a coma following a bike accident.

“While I generally hesitate to share personal details on social media, it felt right to include all of you who’ve supported Juan over the years as friends, fans, fellow music (and food, cat, bike, Japan) lovers and musicians,” she wrote. “Juan was in a solo (no cars, other people) and very serious bicycle accident on 1/13/20 not far from our home. He – as always – was wearing a helmet and protective clothing but sustained serious head trauma in the form of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); his form of TBI is Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) and as of today, he remains in a coma. The only prognosis is to wait and see, as the brain is a complicated organ and the outcomes for DAI patients has a range as wide as the sea. While frustrating, it also allows for a world of positive outcomes so we can only hope for the best.”

Anne is asking for everyone to keep Juan in their thoughts. She is also looking for people who have a first-person account of his specific kind of injury. “We’re also very eager to hear from neurologists, medical professionals with experience in DAI and TBI, first-person accounts of similar trauma and outcomes – essentially any useful, factual and accurate resources that relate to Juan’s injury. If you have any of these, please DM me (Anne) @tunatoast.”

Alderete has been a force in the bass world since the 1980s with his time in Racer X and made waves again with The Mars Volta, Big Sir, Vato Negro, and Deltron 3030. Most recently he’s been playing bass for Marilyn Manson. On a personal note, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing him several times, and he’s one of the warmest, most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met.

Our thoughts are with Juan and his wife Anne. We’re wishing him a speedy recovery!

Juan is a mad man on the bass! He has been an influence on me from Racer X, The Scream, really everything this guy does is just rock solid and awesome. I pray for his wife’s comfort and more importantly for Juan’s recovery. As will my whole congregation this morning. God Bless and a speedy recovery!
