Top 10: The Most Watched Bass Videos (April 2020)
We love sharing excellent bass videos, and April was a great month for them. Here are the top 10 No Treble reader favorite videos for the month. Enjoy.
1. Leland Sklar: “Stratus” Playthrough and Discussion
When Leland Sklar kicked off his new Youtube series late last month, we shared the first one. At the time, I hoped he would eventually get to “Stratus.” Good news: Two days ago, Lee did just that, with a great playalong and great story.
2. Thundercat Breaks Down His Favorite Bass Lines
I love it when bassists share their inspiration – the players and lines that stick out to them over their lives. Pitchfork posted this incredible video with Thundercat, who breaks down some of his favorite lines and players (and more).
3. Stuart Clayton: “Teen Town” Bass Line Tutorial
Stuart Clayton always provides amazing lessons and transcriptions. In this clip, he walks through the bass line on “Teen Town,” written by Jaco Pastorius and released on the Weather Report album, “Heavy Weather.”
4. Guy Pratt’s Lockdown Licks: Ain’t No Doubt
On the bright side of the world being on lockdown, many of our favorite bassists are able to take the time to create videos. That includes session ace Guy Pratt. He’s kicked off a new series he’s calling “Lockdown Licks.”
5. Dirty Loops: Rock You
Dirty Loops is back with a new video and a new tune. “Rock You” once again features the trio of keyboardist/vocalist Jonah Nilsson, bassist Henrik Linder, and drummer Aron Mellergård, who are joined by other musicians on the track.
6. Mai Leisz: Skies Above Salkantay
Mai Leisz has just released a fantastic new single called “Skies Above Salkantay,” which features guitarist Mike Landau, drummer Gary Novak, and her husband Greg Leisz on pedal steel and guitar. The track is accompanied by a beautiful music video.
7. Gabriel Severn: Donna Lee
During this year’s NAMM Show, I had a great chat with Gabriel Severn and his dad. His dad said that at a very early age, Gabriel was super interested in the music of Jaco Pastorius. So it wasn’t a surprise when his mom sent me this video of Gabriel performing “Donna Lee.”
8. Jackie Clark, MonoNeon, and Eric Gales: Let’s Work (Prince Tribute)
This video features two bassists: Jackie Clark and MonoNeon. However, the other person in the video is the one playing bass. And that person is the guitar legend Eric Gales! Check out their epic tribute to Prince.
9. Viaceslav Svedov: Nasty Funk with “Old Smoothie”
Viaceslav Svedov is back! He said this he hasn’t posted a video since 2015, and we’ve missed him. In this new video, he broke out his Music Man StingRay 40th Anniversary “Old Smoothie” bass to perform what he calls “Nasty Funk.”
