Bass of the Week: Elrick Bass Guitars Gold Series Custom SLC I
Our pal Sam Montooth recently shared some photos of his new bass on Facebook and it stopped me in my tracks. This Gold Series six-string bass by the inimitable Rob Elrick bass grabs your attention with an exotic ebony top that resembles a decadent chocolate cake. It’s got a lot of other unique features, too, as it is a customized version of the luthier’s SLC model.
“It is a narrow spaced 6-string with a 5-string sized hollow body, but it is 32-inch scale while the SLC is 33-inch scale,” Elrick tells us. “The pickups are Aero, but they are not the pickups used in the SLC.”
The custom spec bass is built with a walnut body, quarter-sawn maple neck with a top-matched Macassar ebony face, and Macassar ebony fretboard. Its Aero pickups are matched with passive electronics in a simple Volume/Volume/Tone control layout. Other features include Hipshot hardware, pearl dot inlays, and glow-in-the-dark side dots.
