1. Charles Berthoud: When They Say You Should Just Play Piano
Charles Berthoud is known for pushing the boundaries, and he sometimes gets snarky comments about his approach. One of them is obviously “you should just play piano!” So he did just that, and we absolutely love it.
2. Tokyo Groove Jyoshi: Funk No.1
Back in 2019, Rod Wray sent us a video by Tokyo Groove Jyoshi and their unique performance of Tower of Power’s “What Is Hip?”. Here’s a video bassist Juna Serita released in October, with the band getting down on “Funk No.1”.
3. The Faces: (I Know) I’m Losing You
Here’s a great clip of The Faces performing live in 1971. In this one, they cover “(I Know) I’m Losing You” with the great Ronnie Lane on bass.
4. Marcus Miller Band: “Panther” (and More) – Live
Today, we have a cool vid featuring master bassist Marcus Miller. It’s a treat to see the OG band! They start off with “Panther”, then Marcus puts down the Fender Jazz and picks up a 5-string Sadowsky for another breathtaking performance.

Yes, Halloween was yesterday, but we’re going to extend it a bit. In this video, the band gets in full costume to perform an epic cover of the Hall and Oates tune, “You Make My Dreams Come True”.
7. Rhonda Smith: Won’t Come Back
The ever-talented Rhonda Smith has just dropped a video for her new song “Won’t Come Back,” which is sure to get you grooving into the weekend. The bass icon, who has performed with Prince and Jeff Beck, dishes out a slow jam about a lost love.
8. Rickie Lee Jones (with Reggie McBride): Old Grey Whistle Test Performance
Our friend Steve Lee shared this video on Facebook (via another friend, Dave Swift). This is a fantastic clip of Rickie Lee Jones performing on Old Grey Whistle Test on September 9, 1979. The great Reggie McBride laid down some sweet bass in this one.

Cory Wong keeps bringing the heat with music from “The Paisley Park Session”. In this video, the band performs their own take on Vulfpeck’s “Dean Town”, with Sonny T ripping it up.

Andrew Freed of Bass Freedom has put together a comprehensive video on the history of slap bass. It dates all the way back to the 1920’s and continues through today’s bassists.
