The reader favorite list for the month of June is a fun one!
1. Brady Watt with Brad Wilk and Robert Trujillo: Nobody Home
Brady Watt is a monster bassist, but he’s also a master of collaboration. His Bass & Bars series sees him teaming up with legendary hip hop artists. Now he’s aligned the rhythm sections of Rage Against The Machine and Metallica.
2. Mohini Dey and Marco Minnemann: Konnakol Games
Bassist Mohini Dey and drummer Marco Minnemann visited Sweetwater’s and put on a show. The duo plays a fun game involving konnakol.
3. Billy Sheehan: Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy (Bass Playthrough)
Mr. Big’s celebrated the 30th anniversary of the release of “Lean Into It” last year. Billy Sheehan decided to take this trip down memory lane, performing along to “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”.
4. Snarky Puppy: Trinity
Snarky Puppy has a new album coming in September, and they shared this video to help build the excitement. “Trinity” was written by Mark Lettieri, and it grooves.
5. Rebecca Johnson Band: I Feel Good
Here’s a super funky performance of Rebecca Johnson and her band performing a couple of days ago. In this clip, they get down on “I Feel Good”. As usual, her ability to sing and play at the same time is impressive.
6. Julia Hofer: Best of Bass Lines – Forget Me Nots
Thomann’s Guitars & Basses recently shared a new “Best of Bass Lines” video by Julia Hofer. In this episode, Julia focuses on Freddie Washington’s excellent bass line on Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots”, including a transcription.
7. Antonio Sanchez and Nathan East: “The Chicken” Jam
Today, we have a nice video featuring bass legend Nathan East and drummer Antonio Sanchez. They take on the classic tune, “The Chicken” (popularized for us by Jaco Pastorius). Nathan solos the back pickup and goes to WORK!
8. Scary Pockets: Sledgehammer
Scary Pockets took Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and made it their own. The funky cover was made with the help of guest vocalist Ben Barnes, along with Nick Campbell on bass, Abe Laboriel Jr. on drums and background vocals.
9. Flabba Holt: Behind My Greatest Bass Lines
As one of the most prolific bassists in reggae, Flabba Holt, has created some incredibly hypnotic bass lines. That’s how I got stuck on his “Behind My Greatest Bass Lines” video, which is equally hypnotic.
10. Liquid Tension Experiment: Hypersonic
Today is Tony Levin’s birthday, and we’ve spent the day listening to the wealth of music he’s been a part of over the years. Here he is rocking it out with Liquid Tension Experiment on “Hypersonic”. The tune is from “LTE3”, which was released in April 2021.
